Glaucoma Testing

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that cause damage to the optic nerve, which is vital for vision. This damage is often caused by an increase in intraocular pressure (IOP) — the pressure inside the eye. If left untreated, glaucoma can lead to vision loss and even blindness.

There are two main types of glaucoma:

  • Open-angle glaucoma (the most common type): The drainage angle of the eye is open, but the eye doesn't drain fluid as well as it should, leading to a gradual buildup of pressure. This type usually develops slowly and painlessly, so you may not notice any symptoms until significant vision loss occurs.

  • Narrow angle glaucoma: This occurs when the angle between the iris and cornea becomes too narrow, blocking the drainage of fluid, which can cause a sudden increase in pressure. This type is less common but can cause symptoms like severe eye pain, headaches, nausea, and blurred vision. It requires immediate medical attention.

Other forms of glaucoma include normal-tension glaucoma and congenital glaucoma (present at birth).

Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing glaucoma and preventing further vision loss. Treatment options can include medications (such as eye drops), laser treatments, or surgery, depending on the type and severity. Regular eye exams are important for detecting it early, especially if you're at higher risk due to factors like age, family history, or ethnicity.

Additional testing performed for patients with glaucoma or glaucoma suspects may include:

  • Visual Field Testing

  • Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT)

  • Full-Field Electroretinography (ffERG)

  • Extended Color Vision

  • Fundus Photography

  • Monitoring of Intraocular Pressure (IOP)
